The Pâté-Croûte World Championship: UK Selection

- Categories : News & Events

The World Championship of Pâté Croûte is designed to help preserve a French culinary heritage dating from the Middle Ages; the preparation of pâté croûte, a delicious crusted meat pie. For 14 years, professionals such as cuisine and pastry chefs, bakers, butchers and more have been flocking to take part of this famous competition held yearly at the beginning of December.

The championship brings together professional chefs, pastry artisans, and culinary enthusiasts from around the globe to showcase their skills and creativity in crafting exceptional pâté croûte. Participants prepare their pâté croûte creations using a wide variety of ingredients, including various meats, game, herbs, and spices, all skilfully prepared to create a delicious, beautiful and refined dish.

The event is no longer strictly reserved for French participants. Entries from America, Asia, Polynesia, Europe have made their presence known. This is the perfect time for the UK to be part of the prestigious competition and reveal to the world our best pie-making skills.

The very first UK semi-final will be held on Thursday 28th of September 2023 at the French Ambassador’s Residence of London. At Classic Fine Foods, we are happy to announce that will be sponsoring the exceptional event for the first time. Come along to support the different teams and watch them showcase their impressive culinary skills.

Contestants will present 2 meat base pâté croûte for a blind tasting among a jury panel of distinguished cuisine and pastry chefs, food critics, bakers and key people of the hospitality and culinary industry. The winner of the semi-final will be qualified for the 2023 World Championship of Pâté Croûte (Championnat de Monde de Pâté-Croûte) that will be taking place on Monday 4th of December in Lyon, France. 15 participants world-wide will be selected for the final.

History of the Pâté-Croûte World Championship

The competition was started in 2009 by four friends from Lyon; Audrey Merle, Chef Christophe Marguin, Gilles Demange and Arnaud Bernollin. The group formed the Brotherhood of Pâté Croûte (La Confrérie du Pâté-Croûte) with the aim of preserving the heritage of this historic French delicacy.

When establishing this worldwide competition, they created a rigorous set of rules to help determine the best entries of the dish through a series of qualifying rounds leading up to the finals. Only experienced food catering professionals are allowed to participate, and all the tastings are blind, conducted by experts in gastronomy to make the process completely unbiased.

After 14 years, Pâté Croûte World Championship is recognised as one of the most reputable culinary competitions in the world.
